Petchfield Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Late C16, extended mid-C18 and refronted in mid-C19 with further
mid-C20 alterations. Part timber-framed with rendered infill on rubble base,
partly stuccoed with some brick refacing, part handmade brick and part rubble
with ashlar dressings. Slate and plain tiled roofs with tall brick stacks.
Original part of three framed bays aligned north-west/south-east. An C18
parallel range was built adjoining the north-east side; refronted to south-
east in C19. Two storeys, attic and cellar with three-course bands at
storey levels of C18 part. Framing: original part has two rows of close-set
studding exposed at first floor level and long straight braces at north-west
corner; the south-west side is jettied on a moulded bressummer. The jetty
is underbuilt at the north-west end. There is a collar and tie-beam truss
with two collars, four struts to lower collar and two to upper collar, at the
north-west end. South-east front elevation: C19 refronting composed of large
central wing (adjoining gable end of original part at rear) which has a 3-light
C19 casement with a cambered head on each floor. There is a single-storey and
attic wing adjoining to the left with a 3-light C19 ground floor casement.
To the right of the central part a C19 lean-to addition adjoins the gable end
of the C18 range; this C18 part has a first floor 2-light casement with a
cambered head and an attic light. The main entrance in the south-west side
of the original part has a C19 lean-to timber porch and a flush-panelled door
(the two upper panels of which are glazed). A Norwich Union fire insurance
mark is attached to the rear of the C19 west wing. Interior: the roof of the
original part largely survives and has two intermediate collar and tie-beam
trusses with struts. The main ground floor room has two large stop-chamfered
ceiling beams and a plaster ceiling with moulded borders and fruit and flower
reliefs.
