Tomb slab in railed enclosure. c1837, restored c1941. Ashlar, wrought iron
railings. Plain slab with inscription, spear head railings with lotus-heads
to standards. Commemorates Llywelyn Meyrick LLE, FSA, only son of Samuel
Meyrick of Goodrich Court KH, and also Samuel Rush Meyrick. The Meyricks
were pioneer collectors of arms and armour. Samuel Rush Meyrick was the
author of A Critical Inquiry into Ancient Armour (c1824) and was knighted
by George IV for re-arranging the Armouries at the Tower of London and at
Windsor. The Meyrick Society became a prestigious academic body and is
well known as a small circle of "amateur d'armes". The monument
was repaired in 1940 by members of the Meyrick Society of London to
commemorate their 50th anniversary.
