The Mountsorrel Cross
c250m. S.E. of Church
1.6.66 I
Village market cross of medieval period. Fine stone cross originally standing
in the Main Street at Mountsorrel, removed here late C18. Base consists
of five round steps with a square socket stone carved with bats with their
wings extended at the corners. Tall monolithic shaft carved with heads and
devices. Topstone formed of openwork of upright flat hexagonal shape with
wide side and central bar, perhaps representing a weaver's shuttle. The stone
is carved with little people and grotesque heads. The top has a broken off
Gothic crocket. A charter to hold a market at Mountsorrel was granted by
Edward I in 1292. Scheduled ancient monument.
