Quarryman's cottage, now cottage. Early C18 with probably mid-to late
C19 alterations and additions. Dressed and coursed yellow/grey Grinshill
sandstone rubble with ashlar facing to front and right-hand gable end
rebuilt in red brick; plain tile roof. Single cell plan. One storey
and gable-lit attic. Integral brick end stack to left. Small inserted
first-floor square window, central ground-floor 2-light wooden casement
with stone cill and keyed lintel (replacing door - see straight joints
beneath) and boarded door to right with keyed lintel (inserted in widened
window opening). Blocked window to left with stone cill and keyed lintel.
Inscribed quarrymens' graffiti to right of door including small circles
and initials "E.P." and "J.W" within lined borders (other initials
illegible at the survey - December 1985). Name inscribed on left-hand
blocked window: "John Fielding"(?). Right-hand gable end with pair of
segmental-headed 2-light wooden casements and rubble lean-to with 2-light
wooden casement to front and external brick stack to rear. Probable
former blacksmith's shop set back to left with integral brick corner
stack to front, 2-light wooden casement to front and pair of boarded doors
inside. Interior of house not inspected. The front formerly consisted
of a central doorway with flanking windows (see straight joints) and was
probably altered at some time in the C19.
