Former stables, converted to form a dwelling. C17, extended late C19,
altered 1985. Red brick, roof removed at time of inspection. 2 storeys.
Rectangular block. Double gable front. Plinth. Triple arches on ground
floor with projecting key blocks and impost bands. Entrance in right
arch, 2 to centre and left blocked. 2 first floor window openings with
central blind opening. Gables rebuilt with projecting brick bands. Both
return walls slightly recessed. 1 bay of window openings on left return.
To rear double gable rebuilt as at front with central stack. 2 bays of
2 light casements, slightly cambered heads on ground floor, short plat
band below first floor sills. Attached to right a 2 storey C19 gabled
block with entrance and window opening with cambered heads. End stack.
Attached to left a 1 storey C19 gabled outbuilding with a gault brick
extruded stack. This building is reputed to have been built as stabling
for the horses of King James I who often stayed at Royston for hunting.
It was certainly used to stable horses for the Odsey Races, established
in the early C17 and run along level land by the side of the Baldock
Road, the Roman Icknield Way, by the late C18. The house was formerly
known as the Jockey House and the Thrift. (VCH 1912). Listed for
historic interest.
