GV II

House. C16 or earlier S crosswing to former hall house, hall range
probably reconstructed C17 but virtually rebuilt in comprehensive
remodelling with extensions c.1965. Timber frame crosswing, roughcast
masonry walls elsewhere, timbers exposed on 1st floor front largely
bogus. Steep red tiled roofs. 2-storeys irregular house facing E, with
extensive rear extensions. Small flush casement windows, door in middle
of hall range with one window each side and one in small gable over.
Large internal chimney with back-to-back fireplaces at junction of hall
with older SE crosswing. This has an original 2-bays crown-post roof
exposed in the upper room. Tie-beam formerly with curved braces carries
chamfered square crown-post with slots for axial braces to longitudinal
collar purlin. Curved braces in N wall. Undivided upper room will have
been solar of original house, presumably an open hall to N. (East
Hertfordshire Archaeological Society Newsletter July 1965: RCHM
