GV II

Japanese House. Early C20 or earlier, probably made in Japan,
erected here between 1905 and 1926 for Herbert Goode (1865-1937)
a wealthy glass and china merchant who began the Japanese Garden
in 1905. Timber frame with wooden cladding and hipped shingle
roof. A 2 storeys rectangular building with projecting verandah-
as at 2 levels with separate roofs and small gabled porch. Of
the type named SEI-SHIN-TE (the Pure Heart) used principally as a
retreat from a main house. Normally placed outside a garden, but
this is in the garden and is more ornamental for this reason.
Paper sliding screens on E replaced by glass. (Japanese Garden
(1933) 20-1).
