House. C16 and C17 with C19 alterations and additions. Coursed, squared
gritstone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 6 first-floor windows. C20 glazed
door right, 2 round-headed mullioned windows, of 4 and 5 lights and with
straight hoodmoulds, to left. Between them a blocked round-arched doorway
with bolection moulding and C20 casement. First floor: 6 cross-mullioned
windows, the fourth from left blocked, the fifth and sixth having the
mullion removed below the transom and C20 casements inserted. Remaining
windows casements with lead cames. Moulded string-course at first-floor
level, moulded eaves cornice, ashlar coping. Stacks: centre and right
gable. Rear: blocked segmental-headed doorway; first-floor has 3- and
5-light double-chamfered mullion windows; blocked first-floor door to right
with chamfered surround and deep lintel. Left gable end rebuilt: first-
floor door reached by external stone stair. Attached range to right, C19,
2 storeys, 3 bays, not of special interest. Interior not inspected. A
painting of the house by J M W Turner is at Farnley Hall and shows the
right-hand range before rebuilding.
