Large house. Early C17 low range to N. Early C18 block to S enlarged
c.1830-40. Two mid to late C19 additions to NE. Altered C20. Early range
has traces of original timber frame. Brick, C19 stone dressings, slate
roofs. Complex house of 2 storeys of differing heights, some
attics. S or garden front has 5 bays of early C18 to left. Ground floor
French windows. First floor glazing bar sashes. Rubbed brick heads.
Coped parapet. 3 dormers. End stacks. 3 c.1830-40 bays to right with
ground floor sashes and central entrance. Taller parapet but no attic.
Plat bands and string course cornice continue on E return or road front
of 3 bays. Entrance to right: large semi-circular fanlight and margin
lights surround panelled door. Blank arcade to left. First floor glazing
bar sashes. One bay addition to right forward: 3 light ground floor
window and mansard roof. Further right: late C19 extension with Serliana
entrance with sculpted heads in soffit of arch, tripartite 1st floor
window with bracketed sill and stone surround with incised ornament.
Heavy string course and cornice. Return to N has large external chimney,
curved steps out on plan and an elaborate cap. To rear of early C18
block and facing N is original C17 range: 2 low storeys. Central
entrance. Yorkshire casements. Right end stack. Interior: some original
timbers survive in early range, fireplace with side cupboards and
cambered brick heads. In early C18 block, panelling and moulded cornice.
Victorian plasterwork. Landscaped grounds. (RCHM Typescript).
