Pair of gate piers. Early - mid C18. Sandstone ashlar and vermiculated
sandstone. 2 square section piers approximately 4 metres high on finely
tooled bases. Vermiculated long and short quoins form alternate bands of
rustication to front and back. Shallow pilasters to each side. Impost band
with raised key moulding. Frieze with floral swag in high relief to front
and back; reversed scrolled consoles to sides. Overhanging dentilled
cornice with low flat caps. Forms entrance to the Castle Howard Estate.
