Church of St Wilfrid. 1845 probably by John Oates ofHarrogate. Magnesian
limestone; steeply-pitched blue slate roof. 4-bay nave with west bellcote,
south porch to bay 1 and a 3-bay chancel. with north vestry. In an Early
English style. Plinth. The porch has a roll-moulded pointed arch and
attached columns plus hoodmould; the steeply-pitched roof has a coping with
an ornate cross finial. 3 paired lancet windows to the nave, divided by
buttresses; a roll-moulded string course at window sill level is carried
around the building. The chancel has a central chamfered pointed-arched
doorway flanked by lancet windows and buttresses. Gable copings to nave and
chancel. A 3-light east window, the central light taller with a stepped
hoodmould. North side: lancet windows as south side; west end: 2 lancet
windows divided by a deep stepped buttress terminating in a corbel
supporting the bellcote composed of 4 shouldered arches containing 2 bells,
with spire and weather-vane. Interior: moulded stone corbels support large
roof timbers in cruck-style construction; the chancel arch is suitably tall
and narrow. The church cost £800 to rebuild, the stone coming from quarries
on the nearby Stainley Gill. The Rev J B Wayte was the vicar and a few
carved stones from the earlier church remain.
