GV II*
Pond in water gardens. Completed 1728. For John Aislabie. Stone and clay
lined. Built on small semicircular turf terrace on the west side of the
Canal, at its north end, and framing the statue of the Wrestlers (qv). This
group of terrace, pond and statue was originally balanced by a semicircular
amphitheatre at the south end of the Canal, where the original statue of
Hercules remains (Walker). For historical details see Moon and Crescent
Ponds, with which this forms a group. The Reservoir (qv) at the south end
of the gardens is sometimes referred to as Half Moon Pond. W T C Walker,
personal communication.
