Ford. c1740 for John Aislabie. Gritstone. Approximately 3 metres wide;
large setts flanked by curbs. One of 6 fords across the river between the
Lake and Chinese Wood, carrying a carriage drive associated with the rustic
bridges (qv) in the Seven Bridges Walk. This part of John Aislabies garden
scheme contrasts with the formal ponds and temples upstream, and is
contemporary with the serpentine streams running through woods which were
taken from Chinese and Roman patterns by William Kent and others. A further
example of the way in which Aislabie put new theories into practise very
