House. Late C15 or early C16 cruck framed open hall house, hipped W rear
wing, floor in hall, front gable and chimney later C17, windows altered
and brick infill early C18, small lean-to extensions at rear 1960s.
Timber frame on red brick sill, red brick infill, steep old red tile
roofs. A 1 1/2-storeys T-plan house facing E. 3-windows E front has flush
casement windows, panelled door to left of RH window marking the
position of the former cross-passage. Large gable to left of door has
jettied top over 4-light leaded casement lighting the chamber over the
hall which has similar 4-light window below. 2-light window to S end
parlour with later external gable chimney. Large cruck truss exposed in
N gable end (formerly half-hipped as shown in Buckler dwg of 1838 in
HRO). 3-light casements to each floor. Interior of considerable interest
for extent the original form and details can be reconstructed. 3
cruck-framed bays originally open to the roof except N bay which has
cross-passage and service rooms axially divided and original floor of
flat joists carried on axial beam. Stair probably on W wall. Closed
truss between passage and hall open below cross-beam. Peg-holes for
bench and bench-end at S (upper) end of hall, with evidence for large
casement window originally on E side. 4 pairs of cruck blades, each
terminating just above the collar beam (Type W in N Alcock (ed) Cruck
Construction; an introduction and catalogue (1981)). Unusual use of
side-chimney when hall floored in C17. (RCHM Typescript).
