Country house, now offices and flats. Early C19 (between 1820
and 1834) for Miss Catherine Mellish, incorporating parts of the
C17 fabric. Main stair early C20. Converted in 1970's. Red
brick, some reused, with stucco dressings and slate roofs behind
parapets. A Gothic design - an early instance of accurate
reconstruction of an historical style - showing knowledge of
engravings of the earlier house. SW corner turret was possibly
built on existing foundations. 2-storeys and attics with moulded
brick plinth, floor band, eaves band, parapet, and gable parapets
with finials. Mullioned and transomed windows with labels. Tall
moulded chimney shafts. Buttressed S front has 2 straight sided
gables flanking a dutch gable with a central 2-storeys canted bay
window. Rectangular battlemented oriel on SE corner. Tall
octagonal SW turret with pepper-pot cap and vane. Small
octagonal corner turrets to 2-storeys projecting porch on W side
with pointed arched doorway and window over. Tall projecting
chimney to right with false medicolations and tall heraldic
panels. Interior has elaborate moulded plaster ceilings, a fine
C18 cut sting staircase with twisted balusters and several C18
fine marble fire surrounds.
