Lodge to Hatfield House. Formerly part of the W entrance range
to Bishop Morton's Palace, c1480. C17 and C19 additions. Red
brick. Some C15 diaperwork. Plain tile roof. E elevation to
courtyard has 4-centre arched coach entrance near right end with
heavy moulded beam and chamfered spandrels. Over this a 4-light
wood-frame leaded window of Cl7. Either side are single 1st
floor C15 lights with moulded arched surrounds. Left hand side
of range has 2 projecting 1-window gable ends with ground and 1st
floor 3-light wood casements. S and N ends of whole range have
early Cl7 crow-stepped gables. Return to left part has good late
C18 flush panel door with moulded frame and heart-patterned
glazing-bar fan. 8-window elevation to Fore Street has C17 flush
wood cross bar window over arch. Mainly C19 restored Tudor
windows. 1 C15 1-light window on left end of 1st floor. 1st
floor room over arch has C16 tempera painting of a lion hunt now
covered over.
