2/114 Spa Villa
- II
Spa house, now private residence. c1835. Probably by Ignatius Bonomi.
Limestone rubble, Welsh slate roof. Spinal range with cross wings to either
end. 2 storeys, 4 first-floor windows with gabled central bay breaking
forward slightly and gabled cross wings breaking forward. Central French
doors with inserted single-light casement to left. Canted bay to left cross
wing. French doors beneath original veranda canopy to right cross wing.
First floor: 2-light casement and single-light casement to spinal range with
2-light casements to cross wings. Decorative pendants to gable ends. Ridge
stacks. An early engraving of the house in the possession of the owner
shows that it is substantially unaltered except for the demolition of the
bath house to the right end. Original sketches dated 1835 and drawn in
Durham in the possession of the Worsley family suggest that Bonomi was the
architect.
