II
War memorial. 1919 by Sidney Barnsley. Limestone. Octagonal
stepped base to high octagonal pedestal. Octagonal shaft with
Celtic cross. Delicate floral carving to cross. Fine carved
inscription in serif capitals on pedestal, carried round all sides.
'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR & AS A THANKSGIVING
TO GOD FOR THEIR COMRADES WHOSE LIVES WERE SPARED. THIS CROSS IN
GRATITUDE WAS SET UP BY THEIR FELLOW TOWNSMEN AD 1919'. The whole
memorial is to a simple, although elegantly proportioned, design
typical of Barnsley's furniture.
