TL 82 NW STISTED TUMBLER'S GREEN
(south-east side)

2/306 Maltings 60 metres
south of Gower's
Farmhouse

GV II

Maltings, now cowhouse. Early C19. Red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with
handmade red plain tiles. Square with conical roof, and lean-to extension to
SW, roofed with slate. 2-storey rectangular block to NE. NW elevation (to
road), 4-window range, with segmental arches over the ground floor windows only,
slatted externally. 2 plain boarded doors with segmental arches, one more in SW
extension. Rectangular block is hipped at NE end only, with 2 louvres on ridge.
Similar louvre and weathervane on square block. William May, maltster, is
recorded at Gower's Farm in county directories from 1845 to 1863. The maltings
is shown as at present in the tithe map of 1839 (Essex Record Office, D/CT
355).
