Detached house. Early C17, extended and remodelled in the late C18, with some later
alterations. Roughcast cob and rubble chert; gable end thatched roof. The front
wing is of brick in Flemish bond, also thatched. Originally a 3-room, through
passage plan; the end rooms were heated by end stacks, and the inner room was
unheated. In the C18 the house received an additional room on the left-hand end
(heated by an end stack), was refenestrated and underwent a substantial internal
remodelling. The front wing (to the right-hand side of the house) is used primarily
for storage, and was added in the mid C19. All stacks (2 end, and 2 axial stacks)
with brick shafts. 2 storeys.
Exterior: front: regular 5 window range; all 3-light C18 casement windows with
leaded panes. The 5 ground floor windows identical. Outer lights fixed, with
central iron casement. Modern glazed door to left; C19 panelled door to passage.
Rear with C19 and later fenestration; one C17 window survives with chamfered
mullions and pegged surround; it was formerly of 4 lights but has lost a mullion.
Interior: roof, probably C17 reusing stone smoke-blackened (notably dovetailed
cranked collars and part of a diagonal ridge piece); 5 jointed cruck trusses with
long straight upper principals, with Alcock F2 type apex carpentry. Right-hand end
fireplace lintel with shallow chamfer and step stops. Some C18 panelled doors;
internal panelled shutters; stairs with stick balusters and turned newel looks circa
1800. Round-headed architrave to former recess, now a rear window.
