GV II
Wall of walled-in garden. C18. Red brick in Flemish bond. Encloses 3 sides of
a rectangular walled-in garden 150 metres from NE to SW, 60 metres from NW to
SE, open on the SE side to an artifical lake. The long NW wall has a central
wicket gateway with segmental arch, and 14 piers to each side of it on the
outside (one of which is inside a C19 slate-roofed lean-to potting shed at the
NE end). The NE side has a central vehicle gateway, arch missing, and 5 bays to
each side; to the NW of it the ground is level; to SE the ground declines
steeply, and the plinths and coping descend in curved steps. The SW end has a
central vehicle gateway, apparently originally of Venetian design, the piers or
stanchions now missing, the central arch supported by an intruded lintel. The 5
bays to each side of it descend steeply, as at the other end. Thickness
approximately 0.58 metre at base, reducing with chamfered plinths to 0.23 metre
at the top. Height approximately 4 metres. Moulded brick coping. Stone ball
finials on W and S corner piers, plain stone caps on N and E corner piers.
