Large farmhouse. Circa 1500 with alterations and additions. Cob, stone plinth,
rendered, under gabled-end slate roof. Originally a 3-room through passage plan to
which two end cross wings have been added projecting to the front. Only the hall is
smoke-blackened; large external front lateral stack with brick shaft and bake-oven
bulge heats lower end to left of passage ; right-hand end stack heats parlour; large
inserted back lateral external stack (partly gabled) heats Hall. 2 storeys
throughout.
Front: 2 projecting wings with 1 large C19 3-light timber casement window to each
floor, 6 panes to each light, under shallow segmental window arch. No windows to
lower end of main range which is dominated by stack; doorway to passage under
canopy with shaped brackets; to the right, one 2-light window to each floor, 6
panes to each light. The angle with right-hand wing occupied by stair turret lit by
a 1-light window below, 2-light window above.
Rear: 5 window range to rear, 2 and 3 light windows with C20 timber casements. The
rear of the left-hand wing, formerly a dairy retains a small pointed stone embrasure
about 20 cms tall; otherwise fenestration C19.
Interior: lower end room with very large (now concealed) fireplace. Former hall at
ground floor with 4 large chamfered beams with run-out stops.
Roof: 5 principals. The outer principals (above lower end and parlour) are clean,
purlins threaded, collar and apex morticed and side-pegged, with diagonal ridge-
piece. The inner 3 principals over hall are smoke-blackened (that to parlour end
only to hall side); they are similar to the clean trusses except that the ridge
piece is threaded.
