(east side)

6/46 Peartree Hall
Farmhouse

GV 11

House. C14, C16 and C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red
plain tiles. T-plan originally facing SE, with end stacks, 2 storeys, and
earlier range to SW with axial stack at end, one storey with attics. Entrance
front now to NW. 2:3 window range of C18 and C19 sashes with glazing bars.
Simple doorcase with flat canopy. Some framing exposed internally, with C16,
C17 and C18 detailing; and smoke-blackened rafters in roof. Divided into 2
dwellings c. 1615, re-combined in 1671. A map of 1598 shows a short lane
running S of the house, making a left turn to reach the farmyard. The main
entrance would then have been from this lane rather than from the highway to the
W (Wherein I Dwell, Earls Colne WEA, 1983, 34).
