House. Early C19 with some later C19 alterations at the rear, possibly a remodelling
of an C18 cottage. Whitewashed stuccoed cob and stone rubble; 2 span slate roof,
gabled at ends; end stacks with brick shafts.
Plan: Double depth plan, 2 rooms wide with the principal rooms at the front, one on
either side of a central passage with the stair rising at the rear of the passage.
Internal evidence that the 2 rear first floor rooms have been enlarged, probably in
the mid C19, but in a style sympathetic to the rest of the house. A thick axial wall
in the centre of the house suggests the possibility that the present arrangement is a
remodelling of a single depth cottage.
Exterior: Very intact. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3 bay front with a moulded eaves
cornice. Central recessed panelled front door with a shallow elliptical-headed
fanlight, Greek key frieze, reeded doorcase and panelled reveals. Original timber
sash windows, 12-pane to the first floor, 6 over 9 pane to the ground floor. Ramped
garden wall adjoining right end of house included in the listing. The rear elevation
has a round-headed stair window, left and right sashes and an early C19 half-glazed
rear door.
Interior: Well-preserved. A marbled chimney-piece survives in the ground floor room
left which has segmental-headed recesses to left and right of the fireplce. Joinery
includes shutters, good doors with door furniture intact with reeded doorcases with
rosettes at the corners, a pretty half-glazed door in the through passage with margin
panes and stained glass, a stick baluster stair with a ramped handrail and turned
newel post.
One of a row of houses on the Strand, and the best-preserved of the row.
Rothesay is illustrated in Regional Architecture of the West of England. An early
C20 photograph in the possession of the owner shows cast iron balconies to the first
floor windows and external shutters to the ground floor windows.
