4/57 Butlers Hall Farmhouse
7.8.52 (formerly listed as
- II* "Butlers Hall")
House. C15 and early C17. Timber framed and plastered but with some framing
exposed on west elevation. Roofs are of peg tile and gabled with large ridge
line stack of 4 octagonal shafts and smaller 'L' stack towards north end. Of
'L' plan shape but with gabled crosswing, off-centre on long side. Of 2 storeys
with attics and windows are double hung sashes with small panes. Old lean-to
porch against crosswing with curved arched door head. House composed of 3 main
builds with the formerly jettied C15/C16 crosswing as the earliest stage. To
the south of this is an 'L' shaped 2 storey house of the late C16/early C17 with
substantial timber framing. The posts are jowled and the ground floor timbers
are moulded and chamfered. Internal wall bracing and arch braces to tie beams,
all of a markedly flat profile. Roof has 2 sets of butt purlins in each plane,
the upper with long curving wind bracing. Floor has double spine beams and
soffit tenon with diminished haunches on the floor joists. Scarf joints are
halved and bladed. Large stack with back to back inglenook fireplaces and 2
arch headed fireplaces on the upper floors. 2 of the upper roofs have C17
panelled partitions with carved friezes. Small, later stair tower on the rear.
The short block, north of the crosswing, is basically C17, with a side purlin
wind braced roof much altered. Its ground floor front elevation has a pair of
large buttresses. RCHM 4.
