House, formerly farmhouse. Circa early C17, possibly with earlier origins, with
C18 and C19 additions, altered in later C20. Rendered rubble and cob walls.
Gable ended thatch roof. Brick shaft at right gable end and projecting rubble
rear lateral stack.
Plan: originally 3-room-and-through passage plan with lower end to the right, now
a self-contained cottage. Hall heated by fireplace on rear wall. Inner room has
a newel stair on the rear wall and inserted C18 or C19 stack on the front wall.
Unheated probably C18 dairy wing added at front of inner room with C19 leanto
against it. C18 or C19 outbuilding wing behind inner room converted and altered
in late C20.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical L-shaped front. Right-hand range is single
storey at the front with a C20 plank door to the left and small window next to it,
both under a thatch hood. The wing projecting from the left-hand end has a late
C18 horizontal sliding 16-pane sash on the 1st floor and 2 single-light casements
below. Leanto against rear of wing. To the other side of the wing are small-
paned C19 casements and a circa late C18 16-pane sash on the 1st floor. On the
rear elevation windows are late C20 replacements.
Interior: wide hall fireplace has had its timber lintel replaced. Inner room has
roughly chamfered ceiling beams. Stone newel stairs behind. Several old plank
doors remain. Substantial straight principals visible on 1st floor with collars
halved and dovetailed onto them - it is possible that these may be late medieval
and have smoke-blackening on them, but this could not be verified without
examination of the timbers in the loft.
