SX 9681-9781

14/211 The Alexandra Hotel, 2 houses
adjoining at the south and one at
the north

GV II

Public house and 3 adjoining houses. Circa 1901, one build. Red brick with stone
dressings; slate roof, gabled at ends with 2 gables to the front in the centre of the
public house. Eclectic late Victorian style
Plan: An hotel, now a public house, with a carriage entrance to the right, flanked by
contemporary houses.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2:3:2 window front, the public house, to right of
centre, symmetrical with 3 windows and very deep verges on shaped brackets to the 2
centre gables. Central front door with a porch canopy on brackets, recessed between
walls; V-shaped bay windows to left and right, recessed behind the wall plane of the
front elevation with colonnettes at the point of the V. Fenestration of 4-pane plate
glass sash windows, the first floor left and right windows in round-headed
architraves with keyblocks. To the left of the pub 2 houses with original lean-to
porch hoods on timber traceried brackets and original 2-pane sash windows. To the
right of the pub a segmental-headed archway with a similar house to the right of the
archway with an extra 2-pane sash above the arch.
Interior: Public house modernised, other interiors not inspected.
An eccentric early C20 century design with a well-preserved exterior: group value
with the Starcross pumping house (q.v.).
