Detached house, formerly a farmhouse. C15 or early C16, much remodelled and
extended. Plastered cob, with stone footings. Hipped thatched roof, the right hand
extension under gabled-end slate roof. Formerly a 3-room, through-passage plan which
has been extended to the right (lower end) in the C19 and to the left in C20. The
plan is difficult to determine externally by virtue of the complete C20
refenestration and the alteration of door positions. 2 storeys.
Front: 7 window range; all windows are late C20; large front external stack heats
hall; the through-passage lay to the right of this, the present front door having
been inserted into the hall. The irregular roof line rises over hall and parlour
(and is medieval) to form a gable end behind the front stack. Right-hand end stack
possibly C19. C20 stack towards left hand end all with brick shaft. Rear
fenestration all C20. The interior retains numerous ancient features in situ: plank
and muntin screen to higher end of passage, chamfered with carpenter's mitres and
with run out stops; lower end jettied almost 4' into hall; 2 cross beams to hall,
chamfered with fleur-de-lis stops with bar, 1 forming a bressumer over another screen
between hall and parlour with unchamfered muntins and plastered infil. Fireplace to
hall, stone jambs; lintel, chamfered with run-out stops; a similar but smaller
fireplace in chamber above.
Roof: 2 jointed crucks with cranked collars, morticed and pegged, diagonal ridge
piece; heavily sooted over hall; some sooted battening over parlour; lower end re-
roofed but truss lightly blackened to lower end side.
