Almshouses, former large house and extension. Early C17 and later , timber
framed and plastered. Basically a long rectangular, terrace-like block with
the southern half a large house with unarticulated crosswing at each end and
extension unit to the north. The roofs are all of peg tiles, hipped at the
south-east corner, returning to gable at rear. Behind the northern crosswing
also gabled to rear is a lower two storey kitchen extension block of near
contemporary date with gabled peg tile roof. The roof line hips down slightly
to the lower level northern extension block. Numerous lean-to's on the rear and
tall stack on ridge line on N flank of northern crosswing of 2 builds. Front
has lower floor of C19 red brickwork and 4, two-light C19 casements on first
floor. Ground floor windows are similar but with segmental arched brick heads.
No. 2 has a shopfront like arrangement of a central door with 2 light casements
either side and pentice roof of slate on shaped brackets. At the west end, a
single storey extension with monopitched roof up to parapetted brick front. The
interior reveals a high quality integral floored house of c.1620 with a
solar/parlour wing at south end and service wing at north with near
contemporary, rear kitchen block. The structure of the wings is unusual in that
all the jowled posts are 'in-line' in the front range but are at right angles in
the rear to support the gable tiebeams of these unarticulated ends.
