Description

CRESSING BULFORD MILL LANE
TL 72 SE
(north side)
1/46 Bulford Barns (formerly
21.10.82 listed as Barn approx.
40 metres north-west of
Bulford Farmhouse)

GV II

Wrongly shown on OS map as Bulford Farm. Barn, undergoing conversion to a
dwelling at time of survey, September 1986. Circa 1700. Timber framed,
weatherboarded, roofed with corrugated asbestos. 5 bays aligned NW-SE, with
2-bay midstrey to NE. Unjowled posts, jointed and pegged main frame, with girts
and primary braces. Face-halved and bladed scarfs in wallplates. Arched braces
to tiebeams replaced by bolted knees. An unusual transitional feature is that
in the middle of each bay at each level is a heavy stud, tenoned and pegged to
the horizontal members; the other studs are lighter and are tenoned but not
pegged, and side-nailed where they abut on braces. Joggled butt-purlin roof,
originally half-hipped, now gabled. At the NW end the hip rafters and collar
are complete; at the SE end only the hip-collar remains.
