House, now 2 houses and a shop. C.1580, extended in C17 and C18. 3 bays facing
SE with central stack, forming a lobby-entrance, and one-bay extension to right,
early C17. At left, set back from main elevation, C18 range extending to rear,
now The Bakery. Lean-to extension behind main range. 2 storeys and attics in
main range, 2 storeys in left range. Ground floor, C19 shopfront with glazed
door, both under slated canopy, 2 C19/C20 tripartite sashes of 2-4-2 lights, one
early C19 casement of 12 lights. First floor, 4 late C19 sashes of 6 lights.
One C20 door and one early C19 door with 6 flush panels, both under shallow
hoods. Grouped diagonal shafts. Roof of left range hipped. Jowled posts,
curved tension bracing trenched inside close studding. Underbuilt jetty at
front. Unglazed window with 3 diamond mullions in original right wall, now an
internal partition. Chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, plain
joists. Large wood-burning hearth facing right. In front of original middle
bay, at first floor, blocked original window with 2 moulded mullions and 3
diamond saddle bars. The combination of an original glazed window at the front,
an original unglazed window at the side and lamb's tongue stops, permits a close
dating of c.1580. Clasped purlin roof with arched wind bracing. RCHM 8.
