Church. C13 with some C12 remains and C14 and C15 additions. Restored 1887.
Sandstone rubble with stone slate roofs. Comprises a nave with north aisle
and lower chancel, a north chapel under a pitched roof, north and south porches
and a north tower.
The west wall contains a C13 lancet aisle window and a
restored window under a pointed head with trefoil. To each side of the south
porch there is a lancet window. The gabled porch is C15 and has a moulded
pointed outer arch. The north aisle is lit by a C19 lancet window, partly
within a dormer, to the east of the porch. The porch is late C14, with a
moulded pointed outer arch. The inner doorway is early C16, with a Tudor
arch. The south wall of the chancel is of three bays and has windows each of
a single cinquefoiled ogee light. The east window is C15, of three trefoiled
lights under a pointed head with Perpendicular tracery. The east window of
the north chapel is similar. In the north wall of the chapel is a lancet
window. The two lower stages of the three-stage tower are late C13. The
upper stage appears to be C14. It has angle buttresses to the lower stage,
and an embattled parapet. The north doorway is chamfered with pointed head.
The bell openings are chamfered lancets.
INTERIOR: north arcade is of four
bays with pointed arches chamfered in two orders springing from round columns
with moulded capitals and bases. Two of the capitals are carved with
stiff-leaf decoration. The nave roof, partly restored in C19, has scissor-braced
rafters with a moulded longitudinal plate attached at their intersection,
and three cambered tie beams. The chancel arch is pointed and chamfered in
two orders and springs from responds which are semicircular with a fillet.
To the north of the arch is a doorway, formerly to a rood loft. The three-bay
arcade between the chancel and the north chapel has pointed arches chamfered
in two orders springing from round columns with moulded capitals and bases.
The chancel has a scissor-braced rafter roof. In the north wall of the chance
is a recess with trefoiled head. The communion rails have turned balusters of
early C18 type. The C15 font is octagonal, with carved tracery decoration and
moulded and carved base. Attached to the east and south walls of the chancel
are elaborate late C17 and early C18 wall tablets.
