Dovecote. C17, restored mid-C20. Coursed rubble with conical stone tile
roof. Circular plan. South side has a low entrance with chamfered wooden
architrave and a ledged and boarded door. The roof has three gabled dormers
with 2-light louvred windows, and is capped by a glover, also gabled in three
directions. Interior has a potence in working order, the arms supported by
curved wooden braces, the ladder with wooden rungs. There are 18 tiers of
nesting boxes, each alternate tier with an alighting ledge. In all about 600
nesting boxes. Roof has a truss with two raking struts, the principals rising
to glover. Two secondary trusses placed at a 60 degree angle to main truss
have hanging wall-posts. A perfectly preserved example. Scheduled as an
Ancient Monument, County No 115. (RCHM, 3, p 174, no 5).
