SD 9588 5218

II

Boundary stone, formerly dividing lands of Thomas, Earl of Thanet and
Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall (qV), now dividing Stirton with
Thorlby and Broughton parishes. 1698, millstone grit rubble, c 80 cm
high. Number 36 in original series of 41. Inscribed T (Thanet) on
north-east side and ST (Stephen Tempest) on south-west side. Inscribed
36 on top. Sited "about six yards" within Thanet's land "for the better
preserving it from the Damage of the Water". Part of this stone is in
Stirton with Thorlby CP (qv).
