Cottage. Late C17 or early C18, with C19 and C20 additions at south-west end.
Solid, roughcast walls. Thatched roof, hipped at north-east end. Rendered
chimneystacks in each gable-wall of original cottage, and in gable wall of C19
extension. 2-room plan with centre stair leading up from front door. 2 storeys,
with single-storey addition: 3-window garden front, the old cottage having a
symmetrical 2-window front with plank door in centre; thatched C20 wooden porch.
In this part windows are 3-light wood casements with 2-panes per light. The
windows in C19 addition are taller, 2-light wood casements, the second storey
window retaining original 4 panes. Rear wall, facing road, has no windows. The
north-east gable wall has a 2-light casement window, with 2 panes per light, in
each storey. The south-west gable wall has a second storey window on either side
of stack: both are 2-light wood casements, with 4 panes per light and a 4 pane
transom-light over.
Interior: left-hand ground storey room has large fireplace with granite jambs and
plain wood lintel. Plain unchamfered upper floor beam. Roof has trusses with
plain principal rafters, notched at the apex; collars fixed to face of principals
with 2 wooden pegs and old iron nail at each end. No common rafters, just broad
split thatching spars. Cottages of this date are relatively uncommon in Devon.
