Description

SX 98 NE WOODBURY EXMOUTH ROAD (off west side)

1/99 Lower Nutwell Farmhouse
18.11.77
- II

Detached farmhouse. Circa 1700. Roughcast cob on stone footings; gabled-end
thatched roof. 2-room plan house with wide central through-passage, rear wing,
newel stair turret in the angle thus formed, and an integral outshut; the whole
building is set on an uninterrupted plinth that suggests a single build. Internal
end stacks, and an external end stack to rear wing with a pair of off-sets; all
with brick shafts. 2 storeys.
Front: symmetrical 3-window range; 2- and 3-light C19 casement windows to 1st
floor, lintels at eaves level; 2-light casement window under depressed window arch
to both ground-floor rooms; central doorway under hipped slate canopy. 2-light C19
casement windows to rear wing. The novel stair turret is partially concealed by a
mid-C19 2-storey, flat-roofed extension.
Interior: some contemporary doors, with HL hinges or fleur-de-lis strap hinges;
some of the treads and risers of the stair appear to be original. Roof space not
inspected, but those principals visible in upper rooms are straight.
This is a good and unspoilt example of a C17 plan type.
