5/106 Higher Chichacott Farmhouse
GV II
Farmhouse. C17 possibly with earlier origins, circa late C17 addition with C19 and
C20 alterations. Walls are rendered stone rubble with some cob in places. Hipped
thatched roof, gabled to rear wing. Central rendered brick axial stack. Outshut
rendered rubble stack at gable end of rear wing.
Plan: Longhouse derivative plan with shippon at lower right end, divided by solid
wall from apparently cross passage which had hall and inner room beyond it to left.
Hall heated by axial stack backing onto passage the unheated inner room. In circa
late C17 a heated rear wing was added behind the inner room, possibly as a kitchen.
In C19 and C20 the internal room arrangement was altered, the hall subdivided and
stairs inserted behind the inner room.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front of C20 3-light casements apart from the 1st
floor right-hand window which is 1-light and the window beneath it which has fixed
panes.
Shippon to the right with C20 plank door at its higher end and a similar door to the
passage adjoining to its left. In front of both a C20 conservatory porch has been
added. The left end wall of the house has a C19 gabled porch and to its left is a
narrow C18 leaded light. Rear elevation has gabled wing projecting from the right
end. 2 and 3 light casements C19 apart from the 1st floor windows to the left and
right which have leaded panes and may be C18.
Interior has few early features visible but hall apparently has a large granite
framed fireplace behind the present blocking.
Roof timbers have rough straight principals with lapped and pegged collars -probably
C19. The shippon remains unconverted to domestic use.
This house forms part of an unspoilt hamlet of early farmhouses.
