House, probably a former farmhouse. C16 or C17 with later additions, including
south-west wing said to have been built in 1935. Cob and stone, covered with C20
roughcast. Wheat reed thatched roof with stack in each gable; large projecting
stack with offsets and added shaft at north-east end, pair of rendered brick stacks
on south-west. Seems to be basically a 2-room and cross-passage plan with position
of main entrance moved to lower end; added room on north-east (next to the road)
and a further range of rooms added on north-west side, fronting Ashwell Lane. 2
storeys 4-window front facing south-east; 5 windows in ground storey with modern
doorway in fourth bay from right. Windows all have late C19 or early C20 wood
casements with transom lights, the lower lights with 2 panes each. Projecting in
front of doorway a C16 granite surround brought in from elsewhere; rounded arch
with sunk spandrels, deeply cut ogee mouldings with a hollow between them.
Interior: the 2 original ground-storey rooms have chamfered ceiling-beams, those
in right-hand room with thickened, corbel-like ends. Left-hand room has head-beam
of plank-and-muntin screen, suggesting a former cross-passage along the right-hand
side of the room. In south-west gable a wide fireplace with C20 lintel; large
brick oven to left, with stone opening having a curved top. Right-hand room has
re-used late C16 or early C17 oak panelling. Added room to right has wide
fireplace, now blocked with plain wood lintel; hearth-stone includes a piece of
carved stone with simple zig-zag pattern on the chamfer, brought from elsewhere.
Upper storey not inspected; owner says it has been heightened and re-roofed in C19
or later.
Garden: includes a former barn fronting A382. Mainly cob on a stone plinth,
apparently rebuilt in stone at north-west end. Low corrugated iron roof. This end
has a projecting chimneystack, its top taken down, towards the road; there seems
to have been a heated room here with upper floor, adjacent to the barn end. Upper
floor has chamfered beam end and some heavy joists, all probably re-used. The
lintel over the doorway comprises a piece of the head-beam of a plank-and-muntin
screen and a piece of old principal rafter. Lintel of barn door consists of part
of a chamfered beam with scroll-stop and 2 notches. Roof rebuilt late C19 or C20.
Lying loose in garden a late C16 or early C17 granite jamb of doorway or fireplace,
ovolo-moulded with vase stop.
