Farmhouse. Circa early C17 or earlier, remodelled and extended in circa
early C18 and altered in C20. Roughcast stone rubble. Asbestos tile roof
with half hipped right hand end and hipped left end, and red clay ridge
tiles. One end and 2 lateral stacks with rendered shafts and louvred yellow
clay pots.
Plan and development: The original house had a 3-room and through or cross
passage plan, the lower right end room heated from an end stack and the hall
and inner left room heated from lateral stacks at the back. In circa early
C18 the house was remodelled, a straight staircase was inserted into the
passage creating a lobby entrance, the lower end which might have been
originally unheated became the parlour and the inner left room became the
kitchen. The outshut behind the inner room is probably also an C18
addition. The hall-inner room partition has been moved to enlarge the
inner room.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window south west front. Late C20
aluminium casements in earlier window openings, smaller on the first floor.
Doorway to right of centre with rendered lean-to porch, formerly open
fronted but now with plastic door and with C20 glazed inner door. Small
stone rubble outshut at left hand end of porch with lean-to corrugated iron
roof.
At rear a large projecting and gabled lateral stack at centre and internal
lateral stack and lean-to outshut on right. To left of central stack 2 late
C20 aluminium casements on first floor.
Interior: Most of the internal features are covered and most of the joinery
has been replaced. Circa early C19 straight stair in former passage with
moulded handrails, newels and double dog-gates with scrolled finials to
stiles, fielded bottom panels and stick balusters in top panels. The hall
and inner room have closely spaced - spaced chamfered joists and no main
beams. The roof has collars halved, lapped and pegged to straight
principal in elm.
