GV II
Cottage. 1860's. Stone with brick quoins, window surrounds and banding, under a
slate roof. L-shaped, 2 storeys with 2 stacks. One wing with half hipped gable,
the gable-end windows under pointed arches of red and yellow brick. The other with
gabled end, 2 windows, the one above with a steeper pointed arch than that below.
Red brick banding throughout. The tympana of the upper windows are hung with red
tiles. This is a carefully designed small cottage showing a sensitive use of
varied materials - yellow and red brick, limestone and sandstone, red tiles and
grey and blue slates - and an intelligent use of Gothic forms on a small and
intimate scale. It presents an attractive foil to the grey limestone C19 chapel
opposite.
