Oak Cottage and Downe Thatch
II
House and adjoining cottage. Early C17. Whitewashed rendered cob and atone ;
thatched roof, gabled at right end, hipped at left end ; end stacks, axial stack.
Plan: Single depth plan, 3 rooms wide, possibly originally a 3 room and through
passage house the lower end and passage to the right (Downe Thatch) rebuilt, C20 rear
additions.
Exterior: 2 storey. Asymmetrical 3:1 window front, the roofline of Downe Thatch
slightly lower than Oak Cottage, gabled dormer approximately in centre. C20
thatched porch and front door to Oak Cottage leading directly into central room o
range, C20 porch to left of Downe Thatch. Fenestration of 2- and 3-light C20
casements.
Interior: Oak Cottage inspected. The putative hall, in the centre of the range has a
C20 fireplace, possibly concealing an earlier lintel and jambs, a chamfered step-
stopped crossbeam, exposed joists and an oak plank and muntin screen. A winder stair
rises adjacent to the stack.
Roof: Roof construction of side-pegged jointed cruck construction, no smoke-
blackening.
An attractive C17 house with some good interior features.
