8/84 Great Hanging Bridge
-
- II
Public road bridge over new cut of River Douglas. Probably early to
mid-C18. Rock-faced sandstone. Three-span. Low segmental arches with
triple keystones and archbands, rounded cutwaters and pilastered piers;
parapets of large tooled blocks (probably replacements) that on the south
lettered on the inner side GREAT HANGING BRIDGE. History: River Douglas was
improved for navigation between 1720 and 1742, to provide an outlet from the Wigan
coalfield and the Ribble Estuary. Item closely resembles White Bridge in
Mawdesley CP (qv).
