1851-1852. In tribute to Sir Robert Peel in effecting repeal of Corn Laws. Designed
by the members of the Monument Committee: Grant, Ashton, Knowles, Gorton and possibly
Cunliffe. At instance of William Grant, Chairman, the Tower was built in line with
St Andrew's Church Tower as viewed from his own Nuttall Hall. Rubble, partly coursed.
128 ft high. Square. Narrow, slightly tapering upper stage, with 4 storage of
single 2-light mullioned window to each face and corbelled battlemented top. Wide
base of single storey, with one and 2-light windows, is also battlemented. Conspicuous landmark.
