Large farmhouse. Parts are C17 but most rebuilt in the mid C19. Plastered stone
rubble, some sections are brick and some include cob; stone rubble stacks topped
with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: the farmhouse faces south-east. The main block has a double depth plan, a
front and back room either side of a central entrance hall with main stair to rear.
An axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces heats the left rooms and the front
right room has an end stack. A 1-room plan dairy block projects to rear of the
right room. An L-plan service block projects to right (north-east) of the rear
right room. The main part has a 2-room plan with central through-passage. Both
rooms have end stacks and the largest room, backing onto the main block is the
kitchen. A third room projects at right angles to rear of the right room and has a
disused end stack. The service block is a refurbished C17 building but the roof
here was not available for inspection at the time of this survey. House is 2
storeys.
Exterior: main block has a symmetrical 3-window front arranged about a central
doorway which contains a 4-panel doorway and overlight with margin panes. Flat-
roofed porch has moulded entablature and replacement posts. Each side are 20-pane
sashes and at first floor level 16-pane sashes (the centre one is smaller). Eaves
carried on pairs of shaped brackets and roof is hipped both ends. Left end has 2-
window front; similar sashes to the main front. At the back a round-headed sash
lights the stairs. The service wing contains mostly C19 and C20 casements but also
includes a couple of C17 oak windows with chamfered mullions.
Interior: contains a good deal of mid C19 joinery and other detail including a
geometric stair with open string, stick balusters and mahogany handrail. Little
carpentry detail is exposed in the service block but the rear room has a chamfered
and scroll-stopped crossbeam and a blocked cob fireplace with plain oak lintel.
Roof was not available for inspection at the time of this survey.
From the right end of the main front a tall plastered cob wall with thatch coping
curves forward as a quadrant then returns north-eastwards to join the farmbuildings.
This last section includes an arch-headed doorway. The house overlooks a field and
a narrow strip of garden along the front and left end side is enclosed by original
(that is to say mid C19) cast iron railings and the gate posts have acanthus leaf
heads.
