Matching blocks at either side of No 28. Built as the County Gaol in 1828 by Thomas
Wilkins and extended in 1850 on the model system by Thomas Smith of Hertford. Gault
brick, with stone quoins, plat band and window dressings. 2 storeys, 4 windows,
sashes with glazing bars. No 27 is original with 3 pedimented sashes on the ground
floor, No 29 has 2 early C20 canted bays. Panelled door, fanlight arched keystone
head. Parapet, hipped slate roof. No 27 was the Govenor's House, No 29 the Head
Warder's. The latter is said to contain a steel 'dark' cell.
