Farmhouse. Dated 1857, probably an earlier core. Plastered stone rubble, maybe
with some cob; brick stacks and chimneyshafts; slate roof, formerly thatch.
Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south-west. At the left end is
the parlour with gable-end stack. Next to it is the passage which contains the main
stair. The centre room, the dining room, has an axial stack backing onto the
kitchen which has a gable-end stack. Although all the detail appears to date from
1857 the layout suggests a much earlier shell. House is 2 storeys with secondary
service rooms on the right end.
Exterior: 5-window front of original casements with an attractive margin-pane
pattern of glazing bars. The left 2-window section (to the principal rooms) is
symmetrically arranged around the front doorway. The ground floor windows here are
French windows with boarded lower sections so that they harmonise with the other
windows. Doorway contains a part-glazed 4-panel door with a shallow flat-roofed
porch with slender piers and scrolled sides and front arch. The door is probably a
replacement, the 6-panel door to rear of the passage is an original. Here original
casements like those at the front survive only at ground floor level. Roof is
gable-ended and the left end chimneyshaft displays the datestone of 1857 to the
road.
Interior: shows only C19 joinery detail. The kitchen fireplace is large, built of
brick with a plain oak lintel and it contains a large oven. The roof is tall and
steeply pitched and carried on a series of A-frame trusses with spiked lap-jointed
collars.
Haskins is a very attractive farmhouse largely because of its distinctive C19
windows which are probably the product of a local workshop.
