An early C19 gaol complex of which Nos 5 and 7 formerly housed the treadmill,
Nos 9 and 11 the turnkey's house and the third block the men's cells, but all
converted to dwellings in 1880 by M L Whitton to the designs of his brother
James. The three blocks are in yellow brick, the outer blocks being of
2 storeys. 4 windows with painted stucco lintels, no glazing bars. Ground
floors have 2 canted bays and doorways with plain pilasters and panelled
reveals. Doors of 6 fielded panels. Various later additions. The centre block
is of 3 storeys with canted corners and hipped Welsh slate roof. 1-2-1 windows,
rendered lintels. The centre has a 2-storey rectangular bay of 1-4-1 windows.
Doorway in glazed porch to side. Several of the prisoners' graffiti remain.
