WERRINGTON WERRINGTON PARK
SX 38 NW
9/316 Tunnel directly to north of
- Werrington Park (house)
GV II
Tunnel, possibly an ash-house or larder. Circa C18. Stone rubble. Long tunnel,
built partly into bank to rear (north) of the earlier range to Werrington Park
(house). The original purpose is uncertain although it may have been used as some
form of cool store or larder or alternatively as an ash-house.
The tunnel is built partly into the bank where the ground rises to rear and has round
arched openings at either end. There are several openings in the front wall, facing
Werrington Park (house), these openings with granite surrounds have cills on the
inner side which are splayed downwards, in the form of a shoot.
Interior: The interior is undivided with no sign of any shelving. The roof is
constructed entirely of stone in the form of a barrel vault.
