6/31 Hassall Hall and Hassall
Hall Farmhouse (formerly
both listed as Hassall
6.6.52 Hall)
- II*
Manor House, now 2 houses. C17. Rendered brick with plain slate
roof. Two storeys. Entrance front: five bays symmetrically
disposed. Projecting one-bay wings at either side with 3-light
casement windows of C19 date to the ground and first floors. Band
between the ground and first floors and above the first floor windows.
The gables also have small bands and ashlar coping stones with C20
vases to the corners. The central three bays are recessed and have a
central doorway at ground floor level with a C19 6-panel door the two
central panels of which are arched. The classical surround has Tuscan
pillars to either side supporting doserettes with rosettes. Open
pediment above enclosing a fanlight. To either side at ground and
first floor level are cross-windows. Band between the floors at the
level of the sill of the first floor windows and another which rises
above each of the first floor windows. The left hand side of the
house has three bays at right of single storey height with a catslide
roof above them. These have at far right a window of 4 x 4 sash panes
and at left of this a late C18 or early C19 door and surround, the
door having 6 raised and fielded panels with a moulded surround and
consoles supporting a pedimental hood. To left is a C17 plank door
with bolt-head decoration. To left of this range is the recessed bay
with sash windows of 4 x 4 panes to the ground and first floors and to
left again are three further bays of 2 storeys with an attic which
appear to be an addition of C18 date. These have a doorway at right
of centre. To either side of this are ground floor sash windows of
5 x 4 panes and there are first floor windows of 4 x 4 panes and attic
windows of 2 casement lights.
Interior: One ground floor room has C18 or C19 raised and fielded
panelling and a C19 fireplace with Doric half-columns at the sides
with doserettes above and a pulvinated frieze. The overmantel has a
central arched panel with further half-columns at either side.
Panelled ceiling of painted wood. The hall has an early C19 white
marble fireplace containing a hob grate, and two ovolo-moulded ceiling
beams. One further ground floor room has a double-ovolo-moulded
ceiling beam and panelling below the dado line of run-through moulding
and probably of late C17 date. Off the hall is a C18 staircase of 2
flights with 2 balusters to each tread and moulded tread-ends, a
fluted newel post with curtail to the ramped and moulded handrail.
One further staircase, originally of splat-baluster type but having
now lost its balusters to the farmhouse.
