Gate lodge. 1875 on datestone. Red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone
ashlar dressings. Slate roof. Jacobethan style. L-shaped on plan: main
2-room range with forward-projecting single-room wing to left and entrance
porch/stair turret in angle. North front: 2 storeys, irregular
fenestration. Quoins, chamfered ashlar plinth. Steps to recessed board
door with ornate strap hinges in chamfered ashlar surround beneath cogged
brick frieze and moulded ashlar cornice with carved ashlar strapwork motif
above. Stair turret to right has narrow single-light ashlar windows,
moulded stringcourse. Cogged brick eaves cornice. Wing to left has ground
floor ashlar canted bay window with wooden cross-mullion window to front
flanked by single lights beneath ashlar cornice, moulded stringcourse,
first-floor cross-mullion window in hollow-chamfered ashlar reveal with
ashlar cornice and carved ashlar strapwork motif above. Shaped gables with
shaped kneelers and ashlar finials, those to centre on ashlar corbelled
shafts. Swept roof with decorative slates and crested ridge-tiles, conical
roof to stair turret with wrought-iron finial. Partly-projecting corniced
lateral stacks to left return and rear, with twin diamond-shafted corniced
stacks. Left and right returns have similar details: right return has
square ashlar ground floor bay window; left return, facing Barton Street,
has first floor window with broken ashlar pediment and ornate date-plaque
above.
